The Ficus Amstel King is a great choice if you want a large, elegant and forgiving indoor tree. This plant is known for its long, narrow, banana-like leaves that create a dense, lush canopy. Just give it plenty of bright, indirect light, water it when the top couple inches of soil dry out, and it will thrive.

Botanical name: Ficus 'Amstel King'

Amstel Kings grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. They can also tolerate direct sunlight, though be sure to check the soil regularly since that will cause your Amstel King's soil to dry out faster. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Amstel King's roots to rot (a death sentence).
Medium light diagram
Maintain moist soil

Every week, stick your finger 1 inch into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Caring for your Amstel King
Amstel Kings thrive in bright, indirect light. Their broad, banana-shaped leaves need plenty of filtered sunlight to maintain a lush, full canopy.

Best placement: Near an east-facing window or a few feet away from a bright south/west-facing window with sheer curtains.
Low light: It will survive, but growth will significantly slow down, and it may drop lower leaves as the canopy thins out.
Avoid: Direct midday UAE sun, which can scorch the foliage and cause faded or burnt patches.
Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the top 5–7 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.

How to check: Insert your finger into the soil — if the top layer feels dry, water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom.

Why this matters: Like all Ficus varieties, the Amstel King dislikes sitting in soggy soil, which leads to root rot. However, repeated extreme underwatering will cause the leaves to crisp and drop.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Every 2–3 years, or when roots start crowding the pot and emerging from the drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? All plants, including Amstel Kings, go through a brief “transit shock” when moved to a new home. Repotting too soon adds extra stress, which can slow growth or cause leaf yellowing.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing and can recover faster.
Yes! Amstel Kings benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Amstel King is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes, but with caution. While Amstel Kings are hardy, long-term exposure to the chloramine and high mineral content in UAE tap water can cause issues.

Signs of trouble: If you see leaf edges turning brown or a white crust forming on the soil surface, switch to filtered or distilled water.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water.
To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees Celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes. It is a vigorous grower and can develop into a striking, tall indoor tree reaching 1.5 to 2.5 meters. Its long, leathery leaves give it a weeping, elegant look. You can prune it to control its height and shape.
No — Ingestion can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and vomiting. Keep out of reach of pets.
Yellow leaves: Usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown, crispy edges: Often caused by very dry air (low humidity) or underwatering.
Dropping leaves: Ficus trees often drop leaves when stressed. This is easily triggered by sudden temperature changes, cold AC drafts, overwatering, or moving the plant to a new location.

If you ever need some extra help caring for your Amstel King, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp or book a plant care call with us.
Yes, it prefers moderate to high humidity to keep its large leaves looking fresh, though it adapts reasonably well to average indoor air.

Tip: Mist once a day to maintain humidity
Yes — as long as it’s not placed directly under the AC vent where cold air blows constantly. Prolonged exposure to direct airflow can cause leaf edges to dry out prematurely.
Our priority is to get your houseplant to you as safely as possible and ensure that it flourishes when it gets there.

Your plant will arrive in its nursery pot, securely packaged to protect the leaves and prevent soil spillage.

Once received, place your plant in the spot you plan to keep it in and leave it there until it is time to repot, allowing it to acclimate to its new environment.

There are some exceptions to this approach, specifically with our range of micro succulents, that tend to acclimate just fine outside of their nursery pots. So, we've gone ahead and repotted those plants for you.
