The Rubber Tree is an indoor plant known for its oversized, waxy leaves and sturdy, upright growth.
This house plant is resilient to air conditioning and requires very little attention once established in a spot with enough light.
Rubber Trees thrives in bright, indirect light and are great air purifiers.

Botanical name: Ficus Elastica 'Robusta'

Rubber Trees grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. They can also tolerate direct sunlight, though be sure to check the soil regularly since that will cause your Rubber Tree's soil to dry out faster. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Rubber Tree's roots to rot (a death sentence).

Maintain moist soil

Every week, stick your finger 1 inch into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Caring for your Rubber Tree
Rubber Trees thrive in bright, indirect light and can tolerate short periods of direct sunlight, no longer than 2 hours.

Best placement: Near a south or west-facing window with sheer curtains, or a bright east-facing window.
If the light is too low: Can cause slow growth and leaf drop.
If the light is too strong: Direct UAE sunlight may scorch or fade leaves, especially in the afternoon.
Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.

How to check: Insert your finger deep into the soil — if it’s dry at that depth, it’s time to water. Water until it begins to drain from the bottom of the nursery pot.
Why this matters: Rubber Trees have thick, glossy leaves that store some water, making them moderately drought-tolerant. Overwatering is a common cause of root rot.
Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 2–3 years or when roots start emerging from the drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like all plants, Rubber Trees need time to adapt to their new home after delivery. Repotting too soon can cause extra transplant stress.
Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Rubber Trees benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Rubber Tree is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes, if there are no other options — Rubber Trees are relatively tolerant of the minerals and chloramine in UAE tap water.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — Rubber Trees can grow over 2 meters tall indoors with the right care. They are naturally upright growers, with strong vertical stems and large leaves.
No — the sap contains compounds that can be irritating or toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Dropping lower leaves: Normal as the plant matures, but excessive drop may indicate low light or stress.

Yes — Rubber Trees appreciate moderate humidity. While adaptable, Rubber Trees evolved in warm, humid climates and will grow best in similar conditions.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — as long as it’s kept away from cold air blowing directly onto it, which can cause leaf edges to brown.
Our priority is to get your houseplant to you as safely as possible and ensure that it flourishes when it gets there.

Your plant will arrive in its nursery pot, securely packaged to protect the leaves and prevent soil spillage.

Once received, place your plant in the spot you plan to keep it in and leave it there until it is time to repot, allowing it to acclimate to its new environment.

There are some exceptions to this approach, specifically with our range of micro succulents, that tend to acclimate just fine outside of their nursery pots. So, we've gone ahead and repotted those plants for you.
