If you're bored of green plants or are looking to add some colour to your space, the Fantasy Venice is a good choice without being too flashy.
The leaves are a mix of pink, white, and purple, so it really pops on a shelf. It’s a fun, colorful plant that isn't fussy at all.

Botanical name: Tradescantia Nanouk

Fantasy Venices grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Fantasy Venice to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Fantasy Venice's roots to rot (a death sentence).

Let the soil dry out between waterings

Every 1-2 weeks, stick your finger 25% into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Fantasy Venices thrive in bright, indirect light and can handle a few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun. It's pink, purple, and green variegated leaves develop the strongest colour in brighter conditions. Too little light will make the colours fade to mostly green, while too much harsh direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Best placement: Near an east-facing window, or a few feet back from a south/west-facing window with sheer curtains.

If light is too low: Growth will slow down and variegation will fade.
Water every 7–10 days, allowing the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry between waterings.

How to check: Press your finger into the soil — if the top feels dry, it’s time to water.

Why this matters: Fantasy Venices like consistent moisture but dislike soggy roots. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while letting it dry out too long can cause leaf curling and crispy edges.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 1–2 years, or when you see roots coming through the drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Let it adjust to your home for at least a few months before repotting to avoid transplant shock.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Fantasy Venices benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Fantasy Venice is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes — Fantasy Venices are generally tolerant of UAE tap water containing chloramine, though over time mineral build-up can still affect leaf health.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — it’s a fast grower when happy, producing trailing vines up to 60–90 cm long. It can be grown as a hanging plant or trained to spill over the edge of a shelf. Regular trimming will keep it bushy and colourful.
No — Fantasy Venices can cause mild digestive upset and skin irritation in cats and dogs if ingested or touched. Keep out of reach of pets.
Fading colour: Usually due to insufficient light.
Brown tips or edges: Often from underwatering, low humidity, or water quality issues.

Moderate humidity is ideal, though Fantasy Venices adapt well to average indoor humidity in the UAE.

Why: While it tolerates drier air, slightly higher humidity will keep its leaves soft and vibrant.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — just keep it away from direct cold drafts from AC vents, which can dry the leaves.
