The Light Plant is a low maintenance way to add an instant punch of color to your space.
The center spike of this indoor plant is a vibrant red which stays that way for months, instead of a couple weeks.

Botanical name: Guzmania

Light Plants grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Light Plant to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Light Plant's roots to rot (a death sentence).

Water the central cup

Guzmanias take water through the central cup formbed by their leaves (where the flower is)

  • Keep this cup filled with fresh, drinking water.
  • Every 1-2 weeks, flush the cup to prevent stagnant water and bacteria build up. When you flush the cup, also water the soil.
Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Light Plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Too much direct UAE sun can scorch their soft leaves, while too little light can shorten the lifespan of their colourful flower bracts and slow leaf growth.

Best placement: Near an east-facing window, or slightly back from a south or west-facing window with sheer curtains.

If light is too low: The plant’s colourful bract will fade faster, and new leaf growth may be inconsistent.
Water every 1–2 weeks, keeping the soil moist, but never soggy.

How to check: Push your finger into the soil — if the top few centimetres are dry, it’s time to water. Make sure the central rosette (the cup formed by the leaves) always has a small amount of water in it, and refresh it weekly to prevent stagnation.

Why this matters: Light Plants naturally collect water in their central cups rather than relying solely on roots. Letting the cup dry out for long periods can stress the plant, while overwatering the soil can cause root rot.

Tip: Empty and refill the cup once a week to avoid bacterial growth.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Lights plants rarely need repotting. They typically live 2–3 years, producing baby plants (pups) at their base after flowering.

Why not repot right away? They prefer to settle in their pot and are slow root developers.

Best time to repot: Only when separating the pups from the main plant, ideally October to May.
Yes! Light Plants benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Light Plant is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Not recommended — Light Plants are sensitive to the minerals and additives in UAE tap water, especially chloramine, which can leave marks on leaves and shorten bract life.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Not significantly — once the main rosette flowers, it will not grow taller or produce new leaves. Instead, it will focus on producing pups at the base, which can be separated and grown into new plants.
Yes — Light Plants are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them safe for pet-friendly homes.
Fading colour: Normal over time; indicates the plant is nearing the end of its flowering cycle.
Brown leaf tips: Usually from low humidity, water quality issues, or irregular watering.
Yellow leaves at base: Normal as older leaves age — trim them off.

Yes — Light Plants thrive in moderate to high humidity. Their tropical origins mean they’re adapted to consistently moist air, which keeps their leaves and bract vibrant.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — just keep it away from direct cold drafts from AC vents, which can dry the leaves and the central cup.
