The Valentine Orchid is a rare variant of the Orchid indoor plant known for its red blooms, an alternative to standard flowers, offering months of vibrant color.

Botanical name: Burragera

Valentine Orchids grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Valentine Orchid to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Valentine Orchid's roots to rot (a death sentence).

Let the soil dry out between waterings

Every 1-2 weeks, stick your finger 30-50% into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Valentine Orchids thrive in bright, indirect light. In their natural hybrid origins, they grow under a forest canopy, receiving filtered light through leaves rather than harsh, direct rays.

Best placement: Near an east-facing window or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window with sheer curtains.

If the light is too low: Stems may grow weak, flowers may fade quickly, and blooming cycles may slow.

If the light is too strong: Direct UAE sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves and flowers, leaving brown patches.
Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.

How to check: Gently press your finger into the soil — if it’s dry at the top, it’s time to water.

Why this matters: Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially since Valentine Orchids have pseudobulbs that store water. Underwatering can cause shriveled pseudobulbs and droopy leaves.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Every 1–2 years, preferably after flowering.

Why not repot right away? Newly purchased orchids are already acclimating to a new space, so repotting immediately can shock them and shorten bloom life.

Best time to repot: October to May, after blooms have faded.
Yes! Orchids benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Valentine Orchid is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Not recommended — Valentine Orchids are not tolerant of the minerals and chloramine in UAE tap water, which can build up and damage the roots.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — with proper care, new pseudobulbs will develop each season, increasing the plant’s overall size and bloom count. However, orchids grow slowly and most size changes occur between blooming cycles.
Yes — orchids are non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, we recommend keeping them out of reach to prevent pets from chewing the leaves or flowers.
Yellow leaves: Often a natural aging process for older leaves, but can also indicate overwatering or excessive direct sunlight.

Wrinkled leaves/pseudobulbs: Usually a sign of underwatering or root damage.

If you ever need some extra help caring for your Valentine Orchid, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp or book a plant care call with us.
Yes — Valentine Orchids thrive in high humidity. Orchids evolved in humid tropical forests where moisture in the air helps them absorb water through their leaves as well as roots.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — as long as it’s kept away from cold air blowing directly onto it, which can stress the plant and dry out blooms faster.
