The Boston Fern is known for its unique, sword-shaped fronds, vibrant green colour and air purifying capabilities.
Tip: Mist this indoor plant once a day to maintain humidity.

Botanical name: Nephrolepis Exaltata

Boston Ferns grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Boston Fern to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Boston Fern's roots to rot (a death sentence).
Medium light diagram
Let the top layer of soil dry out before watering

Every week, use your finger to check 2-3cm into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Boston Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight, especially the UAE afternoon sun through glass, can scorch their delicate fronds, while low light can lead to slower growth and loss of their signature blue-green colour.

Best placement: Near an east-facing window or a bright north-facing window.
In a south or west-facing room, place at least 1–2 metres away from the window or use sheer curtains to filter the light.

If the light is too low: New fronds will be smaller, growth will slow, and the plant may lose vibrancy.
Water every 5–7 days, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Boston Ferns dislike drying out completely.

How to check: The top layer of soil should feel slightly moist — water once it becomes dry to the touch.

Why this matters: In nature, these ferns grow in consistently moist environments where humidity is high. Prolonged dryness can cause fronds to crisp, while overwatering without proper drainage can lead to root rot.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 1–2 years, or when the roots are densely packed and starting to come out of the nursery pot. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Ferns can be sensitive to sudden changes in the environment. Give them a few months to acclimate before repotting to avoid transplant shock.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Boston Ferns benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Boston Fern is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Not recommended — Boston Ferns are sensitive to minerals and additives such as chloramine in UAE tap water. Over time, this can cause frond tips to brown.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — over time, Boston Ferns form a lush, spreading clump of fronds, with each frond reaching up to 90 cm in length depending on the amount of light they get and how well they are cared for.
Yes — Boston Ferns are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a great pet-friendly choice.
Brown, crispy edges: Usually from low humidity or under-watering.
Yellowing fronds: Overwatering, poor drainage, or water quality issues.
Loss of blue tone: Often from insufficient light or nutrient deficiency.

Yes — Boston Ferns thrive in high humidity.

Why: In their native tropical environment, the air is constantly moist, helping keep fronds soft and vibrant.

Tip: Mist the fronds once a day to boost humidity.
Yes — as long as you maintain adequate humidity and avoid placing it directly under an AC vent. Cold, dry air can quickly dehydrate the fronds.
