The Cast Iron Plant is one of the easiest plants to own. It has big, deep green leaves that look great, but it doesn't need much from you to survive.
Resilient enough to handle doughts, low-light, and strong AC, this indoor plant earned it's name for surviving in spaces other plants would not.

Botanical name: Aspidistra Elatior

Cast Iron Plants grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light and dark spots, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. They can also tolerate direct midday sunlight because of their waxed leaves. Though be sure to monitor the soil since that will cause your Cast Iron Plant's soil to dry out more quickly.

Let its soil dry out entirely before watering

Every 2-4 weeks, check as deeply into the soil as you can:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: you can use a chopstick to check the moisture.

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Caring for your Cast Iron Plant
Cast Iron Plants thrive in medium, indirect light but can adapt to dim conditions. While they can tolerate brighter spots, exposure to direct sunlight can scorch their broad, dark green leaves.

Best placement: A few metres back from a bright window, or in shaded corners that other plants might struggle with.

If light is too low: Growth may slow, but the plant will generally survive; it’s one of the most shade-tolerant plants you can own.
Water every 2–3 weeks, allowing the entire soil to dry out completely before watering again.

How to check: Stick your finger deep into the soil — if it feels dry at depth, it’s time to water.
Why this matters: The Cast Iron Plant’s roots store water, making it very drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.
Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 3–4 years or when the roots fill the pot and start to come out of the nursery pot. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like many slow-growing plants, it prefers time to adjust to a new environment before being disturbed.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Cast Iron Plants benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Cast Iron Plant is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes — Cast Iron Plants are highly tolerant of minerals and additives in UAE tap water, including chloramine.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — but it’s a slow grower. Indoors, it can reach around 60–90 cm tall.
Yes — Cast Iron Plants are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a great pet-friendly choice.
Yellow leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown tips: Usually from underwatering or extreme heat exposure.
Pale leaves: May indicate too much direct sun bleaching the foliage.

If you ever need some extra help caring for your Cast Iron Plant, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp or book a plant care call with us.
No — it adapts well to average indoor humidity in UAE homes.

Why: Its thick, sturdy leaves reduce water loss, allowing it to thrive in drier conditions.

Tip: While not required, an occasional misting or wipe-down will help keep leaves dust-free and looking vibrant.
Yes — it tolerates AC well, as long as it’s not placed directly in the path of cold air from a vent.
Our priority is to get your houseplant to you as safely as possible and ensure that it flourishes when it gets there.

Your plant will arrive in its nursery pot, securely packaged to protect the leaves and prevent soil spillage.

Once received, place your plant in the spot you plan to keep it in and leave it there until it is time to repot, allowing it to acclimate to its new environment.

There are some exceptions to this approach, specifically with our range of micro succulents, that tend to acclimate just fine outside of their nursery pots. So, we've gone ahead and repotted those plants for you.
