If you're looking a low-maintenance plant for your desk, the Variegated Honey Plant is a good option.
It’s part of the Hoya family, so it stores water in its leaves and doesn't need much from you apart from correct watering.
Sitting at only 15cm tall, this indoor plant is the perfect size to sit right next to your computer without taking over your desk.

Botanical name: Hoya

Honey Plants grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Honey Plant to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Honey Plant's roots to rot (a death sentence).

Let its soil dry out entirely before watering

Every 2-4 weeks, check as deeply into the soil as you can:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered.

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Honey Plants love bright, indirect light and thrive near large, sunny windows.

Best placement: Close to an east-facing window, or a few feet from a south or west-facing window where sunlight is indirect.
If the light is too low: Slows growth and reduces leaf colour vibrancy.
If the light is too strong: Direct UAE summer sun can scorch the leaves.
Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the top half of the soil to dry out between waterings.

How to check: Insert your finger halfway into the soil — if it feels dry, water thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom of the nursery pot.
Why this matters: Honey Plants have thick, waxy leaves that store moisture, making them more tolerant of occasional underwatering than overwatering. Sitting in soggy soil can lead to root rot.
Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Honey Plants prefer to be slightly root-bound and only need repotting every 2–3 years.

Why not repot right away? They bloom best when slightly crowded in their pot. Frequent repotting can stress the plant and reduce flowering.
Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Honey Plants benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Honey Plant is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes, if there are no other options — Honey Plants are moderately tolerant of UAE tap water and its chloramine content.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — Honey Plants are slow to moderate growers that can eventually trail or climb several metres with proper care. They can also produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers once mature.
Yes — Honey Plants are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a pet-friendly choice. However, it’s best to keep them out of reach to avoid damage to leaves or stems.
Yellow leaves: Usually from overwatering.
Pale leaves: Often due to insufficient light.
Brown edges or spots: Can be caused by inconsistent watering or over exposure to strong direct sunlight.

Yes — Honey plants appreciate moderate humidity, especially when blooming.

Why: In nature, they grow in humid forest environments, where moisture in the air supports healthy leaf and flower development..
Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — just keep it away from direct cold drafts from AC vents, which can dry out the leaves and buds.
