Along with the Snake Plant, the ZZ Plant is one the most resilient indoor plants, perfect for beginners.
It stores water in its thick, rhizomes, allowing it to survive weeks of drought or the dry air of an AC-cooled apartment without losing its shape.

Botanical name: Zamioculcas Zamiifolia

ZZ Plants grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light and dark spots, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. They can also tolerate direct midday sunlight because of their waxed leaves. Though be sure to monitor the soil since that will cause your ZZ Plant's soil to dry out more quickly.

Let its soil dry out entirely before watering

Every 2-4 weeks, check as deeply into the soil as you can:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered.

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

ZZ Plants are extremely adaptable, thriving in a wide range of lighting conditions. In their native East African habitats, they grow under tree canopies, which makes them tolerant of low to bright indirect light indoors.

Best placement: Bright, indirect light will encourage faster growth and richer green leaves.

If the light is too low: The ZZ will survive, but growth will slow, and new leaves may be smaller.

If the light is too strong: Direct UAE sunlight can scorch its leaves.
Water every 3–4 weeks, depending on the amount of light it gets. Always let the soil dry out completely before watering again.

How to check: Stick your finger deep into the soil — if it feels dry all the way down, it’s time to water.

Why this matters: ZZ Plants store water in their thick rhizomes (potato-like roots) and stems, allowing them to withstand drought. Overwatering can cause rhizome rot, which is their most common issue.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 2–3 years, or when you see roots or rhizomes pushing up from the soil surface or through drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like most indoor plants, ZZ Plants need time to adjust to their new environment after purchase. Immediate repotting can stress the plant.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! ZZ Plants benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your ZZ Plant is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes — ZZs are relatively tolerant of the minerals and additives in UAE tap water, including chloramine. Their tough, waxy leaves and hardy root system are adapted to environments where water quality varies.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — but slowly. In ideal indoor conditions, they’ll grow taller stems and produce new shoots from the base, forming a lush clump over the years.
No — ZZ Plants can be toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep them out of reach of pets.
Yellow leaves: Often due to overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown tips: Usually caused by very low humidity, underwatering, or salt buildup from tap water.
Soft/mushy stems: A sign of root or rhizome rot from excessive watering.

If you ever need some extra help caring for your ZZ Plant, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp or book a plant care call with us.
No — ZZ Plants prefer dry air. In fact, their natural desert environments often have humidity as low as 10–20%. They’ve adapted by storing water in their leaves and developing a thick, waxy coating that reduces water loss.

Why this matters indoors: Normal UAE indoor humidity levels are perfectly fine — no humidifier or misting needed.
Yes — ZZs adapt well to air-conditioned environments. Just avoid placing them directly under cold air vents, as constant airflow can dry the soil too quickly.
