The short answer

Feed monthly at half the recommended strength, October to May. In June–September, feed only the plants that are actively growing. Water first, skip six weeks after repotting — and never use fertilizer to fix a struggling plant.

A multivitamin, never a meal

A misconception worth clearing up first: fertilizer is not plant food. Plants make their own food through photosynthesis — light, water and carbon dioxide, turned into sugar. The meal comes from light, which is exactly why Light is Guide 01 of this series. Fertilizer is the multivitamin taken alongside it: a plant survives fine without it in the short term, but needs the top-up over the long run to build strong cells, keep its internal processes running and hold its resistance to disease.

What fertilizer actually provides is minerals — the raw nutrients that build strong stems, healthy roots and lush green foliage. In nature, plants draw these from the surrounding soil and decomposing organic matter; in a pot, the mix can only feed a plant for so long before it's depleted. Fertilizer fills that gap — nothing more.

It is rarely the solution to a plant problem. Light, water, potting and pest management are the foundations of plant care, and feeding only makes sense once those are properly in place. Fertilizer supports healthy plants; it does not fix struggling ones.

And because it's a concentrated dose of minerals, it's easy to overdo. Excess fertilizer builds up in the soil as salts and can burn the roots — which is why every dose in this guide errs on the light side, and why the last section covers what buildup looks like and how to undo it.

Decoding the N-P-K numbers

Every fertilizer has three numbers on the front (e.g. 10-10-10). They're the percentages of the three macro-nutrients plants need:

  • Nitrogen (N) — promotes lush, green leaf growth
  • Phosphorus (P) — supports strong roots and helps plants produce flowers and fruit
  • Potassium (K) — overall health: helps plants resist pests, disease and environmental stress

N, P and K are just the headline. They're the three macro-nutrients — the ones plants use in the largest amounts — and in a 10-10-10 bottle they make up roughly a third of the mix. The rest isn't filler: a good fertilizer also carries secondary macro-nutrients like calcium and magnesium, plus trace micro-nutrients — iron, zinc, copper — needed only in tiny amounts but needed all the same. The nutrients work as a team, so the word to look for on the label is “complete” or “all-round”: one that covers the full set, not just the three numbers.

Beyond that, you don't need a different bottle for every plant. A balanced formula like 10-10-10 works for most tropical houseplants — which is most of what grows indoors in the UAE. For flowering plants, choose a formula with a higher middle number (more phosphorus). And for plants sensitive to mineral buildup — cacti and succulents especially — look for specialised formulas with lower overall N-P-K numbers.

Don't overthink the brand It matters far more that you fertilise than which fertilizer you buy. Any balanced, complete all-round fertilizer produces great results — consistency and timing beat expensive specialised bottles every time.

The four types

Fertilizers come from two sources. Organic fertilizers are made from natural ingredients — fish emulsion, compost tea, worm tea, bone meal — minimally processed and environmentally friendly, but with nutrient ratios that are hard to control precisely. Synthetic fertilizers are manufactured mineral salts: a bigger industrial footprint, but exact, standardised N-P-K numbers. Both feed the plant the same minerals.

From there, the choice is the format. There are four common ways to apply fertilizer — what differs is how much control they give you, and how much effort they ask for:

Our default is liquid. It gives the most control over dose and timing — which matters, because the safest way to feed is little and often, and the pellet and spike formats lock in a dose you can't take back.

How it reaches the plant

Whatever the format, all fertilizer ends up as the same thing: mineral salts dissolved in water, delivered to the roots. That one fact explains most of this guide.

For the roots to actually absorb those salts, the soil has to hold onto them. Organic materials like peat and bark — and clay — carry a slight negative electrical charge that locks onto the dissolved nutrients and keeps them within the roots' reach (soil scientists call this cation exchange capacity). Inert materials like pure perlite or pumice have none — water them, and the nutrients wash straight out of the drainage holes. It's one more reason a proper indoor potting mix matters: the right balance of peat, bark and aggregates holds nutrients as well as water.

The salt form is also fertilizer's dark side. A plant that isn't actively drinking doesn't take the salts up — they simply accumulate in the pot with every feed, and enough of them starts burning the roots. That's the thread connecting the rest of this guide: feed only when the plant is growing, and if you overdo it, flush the salts out.

When to feed: the UAE calendar

The short answer: once a month, at half strength, October to May.

The honest answer is that there's no universal schedule, because a plant's nutrient needs depend on how quickly it is growing. Most feeding advice online is written for temperate climates — grow in summer, rest in winter. The Gulf runs the other way round: our mild winter is the growing season; the extreme summer is the stress season.

  • October – May — once a month, at half strength. This is the growing season here.
  • June – September — feed only the plants that are visibly putting out new growth. Many slow right down in the heat, especially near windows; feeding a plant that isn't growing just leaves salts in the soil.
  • Just repotted? — no food for six weeks; fresh mix already has what it needs.
  • Plant struggling? — don't fertilise. Diagnose first.

The heat pause isn't a UAE quirk, either. Even in northern Europe, growers skip feeding in peak summer, when plants enter a temporary heat dormancy — putting their energy into regulating temperature instead of growing. Ours just runs longer.

Indoor plants in AC'd rooms live in a mild, stable climate year-round — so beyond the calendar, two things bend the schedule for an individual plant:

  • Light levels — light is the plant's main energy source. Plants in bright indirect light grow faster and use nutrients more quickly; plants in low light grow slowly and need far less frequent feeding.
  • Plant species — fast growers such as Monsteras and Fiddle Leaf Figs have higher nutrient demands, while slow growers like Snake Plants and ZZ Plants can go several months without additional fertilizer.
The simple rule If your plant is producing new leaves, it can benefit from fertilizer. If it hasn't produced new growth in months, wait until you see signs of active growth before feeding.

How to fertilise

The exact method depends on the type — pellets are mixed in, spikes pushed in — but for liquid fertilizer, our default, the process is four steps:

  1. Water the plant first — lightly, to dampen the root ball. Fertilizing bone-dry soil can burn the roots and cause immediate leaf damage.
  2. Dilute to half the label's recommended strength — always. It's far easier to add more later than to fix over-fertilising.
  3. Apply evenly and let it drain — pour across the whole soil surface, then let the excess run out of the drainage holes so mineral salts don't accumulate in the soil.
  4. Wipe spills off the pot rim — concentrated fertilizer crystallises and damages new growth.

The most forgiving plants

All plants can be harmed by excess minerals, but slower-growing species with robust root systems are noticeably more resistant to fertilizer burn — and more forgiving of a slightly heavy hand. If you're new to feeding, these are the safest plants to learn on — every name links to the plant itself:

At the other end of the scale, thin-leaved tropicals — calatheas, ferns and prayer plants — and the mineral-sensitive cacti and succulents are the quickest to show salt damage. Feed those at quarter strength, less often.

Are you over-fertilising?

While fertilizer provides essential nutrients, more is not always better. When a plant is over-fertilised, it receives more minerals than it can process — the excess builds up in the soil as salts and can burn the delicate root system.

What to look out for

  • Two-tone leaf discolouration — the leaf edges show yellowing that transitions to brown at the very tips
  • Brown, crispy leaf tips — the edges turn brown or look “burnt” while the rest of the leaf stays green
  • Dry texture — the outer edges of the leaves feel dry, brittle and crispy
  • White crust — a white, salty residue on the soil surface or the rim of the pot; the clearest sign of mineral buildup
  • Yellowing lower leaves — older leaves turn yellow first as the roots struggle to function
  • Sudden leaf drop — some plants shed leaves shortly after a heavy fertilizer application
  • Advanced: dry or damaged roots — out of the pot, roots look brown, brittle or dehydrated from salt damage
  • The pattern behind all of them — fertilizer applied often, or in high doses. If that sounds familiar, mineral buildup is the likely cause

The fix

  • Flush the soil — place the plant in a sink or shower and run filtered water through the soil for several minutes, letting it drain freely from the bottom to wash away built-up salts
  • Prune affected areas — with clean scissors, remove severely damaged leaf tips. Be conservative: leaves with small brown patches can still photosynthesise and help the plant recover
  • Remove the crust — carefully scrape away the top centimetre of soil where the white crust has formed, and replace it with fresh indoor potting mix
  • Pause feeding — stop fertilising for 6–8 weeks so the plant can recover, then resume on the calendar above, at half strength

What to expect: damaged leaves will not turn green again. But once the mineral buildup is addressed, new leaves should grow in with healthy green tips — and the browning stops spreading.

Plant struggling? It's almost never nutrients

When a houseplant looks unwell, a nutrient problem is close to the last thing worth checking — 99 times out of 100 the cause is environmental. And feeding a struggling plant usually makes things worse: it isn't growing, so the minerals just sit in the soil as salts. Run these four checks first:

  1. Water and oxygen — roots need a balance of both. Constantly wet soil drowns them; a hydrophobic root ball — water racing down the inside of the pot without soaking in — starves them. Both mimic a deficiency. The Water guide covers the wet–dry cycle.
  2. Pests — sap-sucking insects attack new growth, yellowing and stunting it in ways that look exactly like a nutrient problem — and they're far more common than one. Check the undersides of the leaves against the Pests guide.
  3. Light — making chlorophyll takes light. Pale, fading foliage usually means too little; brown scorched patches mean too much direct sun. The Light guide shows how to read your spot.

What a real deficiency looks like

Cleared all four checks and the plant still isn't right? Then a genuine deficiency is worth considering. Each of the big three leaves a different signature:

  • Nitrogen — the older, lower leaves turn uniformly pale yellow first. Nitrogen is mobile inside the plant: when it runs short, the plant strips it from old leaves to keep new growth going.
  • Potassium — leaf edges and tips turn dry, brown and crispy, and older leaves yellow between the veins while the veins themselves stay green.
  • Phosphorus — rare in foliage plants and hard to spot: darkened leaves with purplish or reddish tints, often on the undersides.

The fix isn't a specialised product — it's a normal dose of the same complete, all-round fertilizer, on the calendar above. The nutrients work as a team, so topping up the full set beats chasing one element.

Quick questions

What do the numbers like 10-10-10 mean?

They're the NPK ratio — the proportions of nitrogen (leaf growth), phosphorus (roots and flowers) and potassium (overall resilience). A balanced 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 covers most foliage houseplants.

Can fertilizer revive a dying plant?

No — and it usually makes things worse. A struggling plant almost always has a light, water, potting, pest or humidity problem. Fix that first; feed again only once it's recovering.

Should I fertilise in winter?

In the UAE, yes — winter is the growing season here, not the dormant one. October to May is when to feed, monthly at half strength. It is the peak of summer (June–September) when you should ease off, and then only for plants that have stopped putting out new growth.

Is more fertilizer faster growth?

The opposite. Excess salts damage roots and block water uptake — burnt tips, crusty soil, dropped leaves. Half-strength monthly is the ceiling, not the floor.

Do expensive fertilizers work better?

No. It matters far more that you fertilise than which fertilizer you buy — any balanced, complete all-round formula produces great results. Consistency and timing beat premium specialised bottles every time.
