Why light matters more than anything else
Light is your plant's food. Inside every leaf, chloroplasts capture it and convert water and carbon dioxide into the sugars the plant lives on. Take the light away, and you take the meal away.
The most common reason indoor plants decline is a mismatch between what the plant needs and what your spot provides. Almost everything else — watering, feeding, repotting — is downstream of this one decision.
How to read the light in your room
A spot is dark, medium or bright depending on a few quiet factors:
- Window size and count — more glass, more light.
- Orientation — south and west windows bring strong direct sun in the UAE; north and east are gentler.
- Obstructions — buildings, trees or awnings that shade part of the day.
- Distance — light drops off fast; two metres from a window can be half the light of one.
Light is direct when the plant can "see" the sun — when the sun is in its line of sight — and indirect when it's ambient brightness.

Is your plant getting too much light?
Too much direct sunlight will cause leaf burn, often on the leaf tips. This looks like bleached patches or faded white or greyish spots.
What to look out for
- Bleached or faded colour — leaves may look washed out, yellowed, or develop pale white patches where the chlorophyll has been destroyed
- Dry texture — the damaged areas usually feel dry, thin and brittle, rather than soft or mushy
- Damage on the sun-facing side — the patches appear only on the side of the plant facing the window or light source, while shaded leaves remain healthy
- Recent increase in light exposure — damage appears after moving a plant next to a window, or during seasonal changes when sunlight becomes more intense
The fix
- Adjust the light — move the plant slightly away from the window, or place a sheer curtain to filter and soften the sunlight
- Prune affected areas — use clean scissors to remove severely damaged leaves. Be conservative: leaves with small sunburnt patches can still photosynthesise and help the plant recover
What to expect: sunburn spots are permanent and will not turn green again. However, once the plant is placed in appropriate light conditions, all new leaves should grow healthy and undamaged.

Is your plant getting too little light?
If a plant is not getting enough light, it may enter "survival mode" to conserve energy, leading to stunted or abnormal growth.
What to look out for
- Low light — the plant is in a dark corner, hallway, or far from a window, and may not be receiving enough light for photosynthesis
- Lower leaves dropping — the leaves dropping are usually the oldest ones, at the bottom of the plant
- Leggy or tilting growth — the plant stretches out or leans aggressively as it tries to reach the nearest light source
- Small or pale leaves — new growth may look washed out or much smaller than the older leaves
- No new leaves or stems — the plant may simply stop growing altogether because it doesn't have the fuel to do so
The fix
- Increase light — open curtains if they are blocking light, move the plant closer to a window, or supplement with a grow light if natural light is limited. If the light is very strong in the new spot, use a sheer curtain to filter it
What to expect: leaves that have already dropped will not grow back in the same spot on the stem, and damaged or pale leaves will not recover. Once the plant receives adequate light, though, its energy balance stabilises — leaf drop should stop, and new growth will gradually come in larger and greener. Because the plant has been conserving energy, recovery may take some time; steady new growth is the sign it's returning to normal.
Examples of leaf loss from low light:
One quiet side-effect: the soil may not be drying enough between waterings. Without enough light to fuel photosynthesis, the plant uses water more slowly, leaving the roots sitting in stagnant moisture. Yellowing throughout the entire plant — rather than just one older leaf — is often the first visible sign, and if the soil stays wet for too long the damage can progress to root rot, where leaves and stems turn black and mushy as the roots decay. Quick questions
Can plants survive in a room with no windows?
Not on natural light alone — even "low-light" plants need some daylight to survive long-term. In a windowless room, a full-spectrum grow light on a timer (8–12 hours a day) does the job — and some plants genuinely thrive on artificial light alone: ZZ Plants, prayer plants, Snake Plants and Money Trees are the reliable picks.
Is sunlight through a window still "direct"?
Yes. If the plant can see the sun through the glass, it's direct light. Glass softens it slightly, but UAE sun through a south or west window will still burn sensitive leaves.
Do grow lights actually work?
Yes — a full-spectrum LED 30–60cm above the plant, 8–12 hours daily, fully substitutes for a bright window. It's the standard fix for darker apartments.
My plant was fine all winter and burned in summer. Why?
The sun's angle changes with the season, and summer light here is far more intense. A spot that was bright-indirect in December can be direct-sun in July. Re-check your spots twice a year.
