Areca Palm

Areca Palms thrive in bright, indirect light. They do best when protected from harsh, direct sunlight. Direct afternoon sun through glass can scorch their fronds, while low light can cause thin, yellowing leaves.

Best placement: Near an east or north-facing window, or a few feet away from a bright south/west-facing window with sheer curtains.

If light is too low: Growth will slow, and fronds may yellow or drop prematurely.

Repot every 2–3 years or when roots start emerging from the bottom of the nursery pot. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away?
Like all plants, Areca Palms need time to acclimate to your home’s conditions. Immediate repotting can cause transplant shock, resulting in drooping fronds or slowed growth.

Best time to repot: October to May in the UAE, when the plant is actively growing and can recover faster.

Yes — but avoid placing it directly in front of AC vents. Constant cold air coming from the AC can dry out your Areca Palm's fronds.

Yes! Areca Palms benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Areca Palm is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth may slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing in hot conditions can stress the plant.
Can I use UAE tap water to water my Areca Palm?

Not recommended — Areca Palms are sensitive to minerals and additives in tap water, especially the chloramine in UAE water. Over time, this can cause leaf tip browning.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Will my Areca Palm get bigger over time?

Yes — Areca Palms are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.
Why are the leaves of my Areca Palm changing colour?

Yes — Areca Palms prefer moderate to high humidity, similar to their tropical origins. Low humidity (common in air-conditioned UAE homes) can cause leaf tips to brown.

Why: Their thin fronds lose moisture quickly, so higher humidity helps prevent dehydration stress.

Tip: Mist the fronds once a day to boost humidity.

Water every 1–2 weeks, keeping the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Areca Palms dislike completely drying out for long periods but are equally sensitive to sitting in water.

How to check: Test the top 3–5 cm of soil with your finger — if it feels dry, it’s time to water.
Why this matters: Areca Palm roots are adapted for evenly moist, well-aerated tropical soils; prolonged dryness can cause frond tips to brown, while overwatering can cause root rot
Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.

Yes — with proper care, Areca Palms grow steadily, producing new fronds from the base. Indoors, they typically reach 1.5–2.5m over several years. Growth is faster in bright conditions with consistent moisture and proper care.

Yellow leaves: Often due to overwatering, poor drainage, or insufficient light.
Brown tips: Common from dry indoor air, water quality issues, or inconsistent watering.
Pale fronds: Usually a sign of nutrient deficiency or not enough light.
