The Umbrella Tree is known for its unique leaves that fan out in a circular pattern.
Trained to climb up a moss pole, our Umbrella Trees are a great option for those looking for an indoor plant to fill up some vertical space.

Botanical name: Schefflera

Umbrella Trees grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. They can also tolerate direct sunlight, though be sure to check the soil regularly since that will cause your Umbrella Tree's soil to dry out faster. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Umbrella Tree's roots to rot (a death sentence).
Medium light diagram
Let the soil dry out between waterings

Every 1-2 weeks, stick your finger 30-50% into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Umbrella Trees thrive in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle morning or late-afternoon direct sun, no longer than 2 hours.

Best placement: Near an east-facing window or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window with sheer curtains.
If the light is too low: Growth becomes leggy, and leaves may yellow or drop.
If the light is too strong: Direct UAE sunlight can cause leaf edges to turn brown or crispy.
Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the top 5–7 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.

How to check: Insert your finger deep into the soil — if the top layer is dry but still slightly moist below, it’s time to water.
Why this matters: Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf drop and wilting. Scheffleras store a small amount of water in their stems, giving them some drought tolerance, but they perform best with consistent watering cycles.
Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 2–3 years or when roots start emerging from the drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like all plants, Umbrella Trees need time to adapt to their new home after delivery. Repotting too soon can cause extra transplant stress.
Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Umbrella Trees benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Umbrella Tree is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes, if there are no other options — Scheffleras are moderately tolerant of the minerals and chloramine in UAE tap water, but it may benefit from filtered water if you notice leaf tip browning.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — indoors, they can reach 1.5–2.5 meters with proper care. Regular pruning can maintain size and encourage bushier growth.
No — Schefflera leaves can be toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing drooling, vomiting, and mouth irritation.
Leaf drop: Often caused by sudden temperature changes, low light, or under/overwatering.
Yellow leaves: Usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
Leggy growth: Indicates insufficient light.

Yes — Umbrella Trees appreciate moderate humidity. In its native tropical climate, humidity supports lush foliage.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — as long as it’s kept away from cold air blowing directly onto it, which can cause stress and leaf drop.
