Unlike its big brother, this Swiss Cheese Vine is a much smaller version, better suited for bookshelves or side tables.
If you love the tropical look of a Monstera but lack the floor space for a giant indoor plant. This version brings that same exotic energy in a manageable, trailing form.

Botanical name: Monstera Adansonii

Swiss Cheese Vines grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Swiss Cheese Vine to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Swiss Cheese Vine's roots to rot (a death sentence).
Medium light diagram
Maintain moist soil

Every week, stick your finger 1-2 inches into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Caring for your Swiss Cheese Vine
Swiss Cheese Vines thrive in bright, indirect light. Indoors, they need plenty of light to develop their iconic fenestrated (split) leaves.
Best placement: Near an east-facing window or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window with sheer curtains.
If the light is too low: Leaves may become smaller, new growth slows, and the signature holes (fenestrations) may not appear.
If the light is too strong: Direct UAE sunlight can cause yellowing or browning of leaf edges.
Water every 1–2 weeks, allowing the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.

How to check: Insert your finger into the soil — if the top layer is dry but still slightly moist below, it’s time to water.
Why this matters: Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause drooping and leaf curl.
Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 1–2 years or when roots start emerging from the drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like all plants, Swiss Cheese Vines need time to adapt to their new home after delivery. Repotting too soon can cause extra transplant stress.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Swiss Cheese Vines benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Swiss Cheese Vine is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
Yes, if there are no other options — Swiss Cheese Vines can handle UAE tap water, but it may benefit from filtered water if you notice leaf tip browning.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — with the right care, this plant will grow long trailing or climbing vines that can reach several meters indoors. Using a moss pole or trellis will encourage it to climb and produce larger, more fenestrated leaves.
No — it can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep it out of reach of pets.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Curling leaves: Usually due to underwatering or low humidity.
Small or solid leaves: May indicate insufficient light.

If you ever need some extra help caring for your Swiss Cheese Vine, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp or book a plant care call with us.
Yes — Swiss Cheese Vines appreciate moderate to high humidity. Monsteras are native to tropical rainforests, where humidity is naturally high. Adequate humidity helps prevent browning leaf edges and promotes lush growth.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — as long as it’s kept away from cold air blowing directly onto it, which can cause leaf edges to brown.
Our priority is to get your houseplant to you as safely as possible and ensure that it flourishes when it gets there.

Your plant will arrive in its nursery pot, securely packaged to protect the leaves and prevent soil spillage.

Once received, place your plant in the spot you plan to keep it in and leave it there until it is time to repot, allowing it to acclimate to its new environment.

There are some exceptions to this approach, specifically with our range of micro succulents, that tend to acclimate just fine outside of their nursery pots. So, we've gone ahead and repotted those plants for you.
