Something wrong? Diagnose before you treat.

Plant care is much easier than you think once you understand this simple framework. Different causes produce very similar symptoms — so the recent history of the plant, not the symptom alone, is what leads to the correct diagnosis.

How it works

Start by deciding which of two categories your problem falls into: a one-off event (sudden, caused by something specific) or long-term care (gradual, caused by an ongoing condition). Identify the category, and the right solution follows.

Step 1

Which kind of problem is it?

Think back over the last few weeks. Did something happen to the plant — or has something been quietly off in its routine?

Category 1

One-off events

These problems happen suddenly and are usually caused by a specific event rather than a long-term health decline.

  • Symptoms appeared quickly — days, not weeks
  • You can point to a moment: a move, a knock, a heatwave
  • The rest of the plant otherwise looks healthy
Physical damage

Often accidental — which is exactly what makes it harder to notice. The classics:

  • Brushing against a plant and bending a stem
  • Curtains rubbing against the leaves
  • Chemical burn from window cleaner

Damaged leaves won't heal — and that's fine. Trim them with clean scissors and let the plant put its energy into new growth. No further treatment needed.

Sunburn

Harsh direct sunlight bleaches the exposed side — large, faded or bleached-looking patches appear within a day or two. It usually happens when:

  • A plant is placed directly in front of a south- or west-facing window without a sheer curtain
  • An indoor plant is suddenly moved outdoors

Move the plant out of the sun's direct line of sight, trim the burned leaves, and it recovers. The too much light section covers it in full.

Environmental shock

Plants dislike sudden change — a sharp swing in conditions causes stress even when nothing is "wrong". The classics:

  • Leaving the AC off while away on holiday → mould on the soil surface
  • Moving a plant from bright light to a dark spot → leaf drop
  • Moving an indoor plant outdoors → leaf scorch

Keep conditions stable and resist the urge to over-correct — most plants readjust within two or three weeks.

Once you identify the specific event, these are the easiest problems to solve: remove or correct the trigger, and give the plant time to recover.

Category 2

Long-term care

These problems develop gradually over time and are usually caused by ongoing care conditions.

  • Symptoms crept in over weeks or months
  • No single event you can point to
  • Slowing growth, spreading discolouration, general decline

Plants rely on a balance of water, oxygen, light and a supportive environment. When any of these runs too high or too low for an extended period, the plant shows stress or decline.

The ten questions to ask first

Start with these to narrow down what’s going wrong — the pyramid below covers each factor in detail:

  • What are the symptoms — and when did they start?
  • Has there been a recent change in routine?
  • How much, and how frequently, are you watering?
  • Are you checking the soil before watering?
  • How long does the soil take to dry?
  • What kind of light is it receiving?
  • How is the plant potted?
  • Are there any signs of pests?
  • Is the AC on or off — affecting humidity and airflow?
  • What is your fertilizing routine?

Step 2

Work through the plant-care pyramid.

The same pyramid as the 101 guides — check the variables in order of importance, starting at the foundation: light. For each one: read the signs, answer the questions, check the mistakes, follow the fix.

Light

Check first

A common reason plants decline is a mismatch between the plant's light needs and the light available in your spot. Most houseplants want bright, indirect light — some tolerate less, some handle direct sun without burning.

Signs it’s this

  • Bleached or faded patches on sun-facing leaves — too much (leaf burn)
  • Soil drying faster than the plant can absorb water — too much
  • Slow growth, leggy stems, small pale leaves, leaf drop — too little
  • Soil staying wet unusually long, raising root-rot risk — too little

Ask yourself

  • How well-lit is the space — dark, medium or bright?
  • How far is the plant from the nearest window?
  • Strong sun: is a sheer curtain filtering it?
  • Can this species tolerate a dark spot — or direct sun?

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong plant for the light levela plant that needs more light than the space provides
  • Underestimating distance from the windowa bright room does not mean a bright spot — light drops off fast away from the glass
  • Thinking low light means no lightno plant survives a space with no natural or artificial light at all

The fix

  • Choose the right plantmatch the species to the light conditions of your spot
  • Relocatemove leggy plants closer to a window; if leaves are burning, move further away or filter with a sheer curtain
  • Add artificial lightin a naturally dark space, a grow light provides the energy the plant needs

Water

Check second

Plants want to cycle between wet and dry. When the soil is wet, roots absorb water and nutrients; as it dries, air pockets form and roots absorb oxygen. Disrupt this rhythm for too long and the plant becomes over- or under-watered — which accounts for the majority of plant problems.

Signs it’s this

  • Yellowing across the whole plant, soft leaves — too wet (often the first sign)
  • Swampy smell, dark soft spots, mushy black stems or roots — too wet, advanced
  • Drooping, crispy brown edges, wrinkled or shrivelled stems — too dry
  • Soil pulling away from the sides of the pot — too dry

Ask yourself

  • When did I last water — and when before that?
  • Am I checking the soil, or watering on a schedule?
  • Am I soaking the whole root ball, or just splashing the top?
  • How long does the soil take to dry out?

Common mistakes

  • Watering on a scheduleevery Sunday regardless — if the soil is still wet, it just stays saturated
  • Incomplete saturationtoo little water leaves dry pockets the roots can't reach
  • Small amounts frequentlya splash every day keeps the surface moist and the lower roots dry
  • Not checking the soil firstthe one habit that prevents almost all of this

The fix

  • Water thoroughlytop-down: drench until water runs from the drainage holes. Or bottom-up: sit the nursery pot in a basin of water and let it absorb from below
  • Let it dry to the plant's leveltop layer only, 30–50%, or completely dry — it depends on the group; the Water guide maps every plant
  • Always check before wateringfinger or wooden skewer into the soil — damp at the plant's dry-level means wait
  • Repot if necessaryroots heavily hit by rot need fresh well-draining indoor mix in a pot with drainage holes

Potting & soil

Check third

How a plant is potted directly affects its ability to cycle between absorbing water and oxygen. The wrong pot or soil traps moisture and keeps the soil wet too long — while hydrophobic or root-bound soil stops water being absorbed at all, dehydrating the plant even when you water well.

Signs it’s this

  • Water sitting on the surface, or running straight through without soaking in
  • Roots circling tightly, poking out of the drainage holes, or crowding out the soil
  • Soil staying wet for too long — the pot, not the watering, is often why
  • Fine for 1–2 years, now struggling on the same routine

Ask yourself

  • Is it potted directly into a decorative pot with no drainage?
  • Is the pot much larger than the root ball?
  • Which soil went in at the last repot — indoor mix, or outdoor?
  • Has the plant outgrown its pot, or the soil turned hydrophobic?

Common mistakes

  • Poor potting setupno drainage holes, or a pot far larger than the root ball — both trap excess moisture
  • Outdoor soilstandard garden soil is too dense for indoor pots and lacks aeration ingredients like perlite or bark
  • Never repottingan outgrown pot or old hydrophobic soil quietly breaks the water–oxygen cycle

The fix

  • Use the double-pot methodkeep the plant in its nursery pot with drainage holes, sitting inside the decorative pot
  • Resize the potif over-potted, go back to a nursery pot only 3–5 cm wider than the root ball
  • Refresh the soilwell-draining indoor mix — perlite, bark, peat and other aggregates keep it light, airy and oxygen-rich

Pests

Check fourth

Pests feed on your plant's nutrients and weaken it over time. The goal is early detection — because pests multiply quickly, a small issue becomes a major infestation if left unchecked. Each pest leaves a different calling card:

Signs it’s this

  • Tiny white, cotton-like spots — mealybugs
  • Fine webs around stems or under leaves — spider mites
  • Small brown, hard bumps on stems or leaves — scale insects
  • Silvery streaks, or tiny slender insects — thrips
  • Clusters of soft-bodied insects on new growth — aphids
  • Small black flies when you water — fungus gnats

Ask yourself

  • Have I checked both sides of the leaves recently?
  • Any new plants brought home in the last month?
  • Is the damage spreading week on week?

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring early signsassuming spots are just dust and waiting until the plant is heavily infested
  • Not checking undersides and stemswhere most pests actually hide
  • Not isolating the plantan infested plant next to healthy ones spreads the problem across the shelf
  • Insufficient treatmenttreating once and stopping — most pests have life cycles that need repeated treatments to break

The fix

  • Isolate immediatelymove the affected plant to a separate room before anything else
  • Rinse the plantsink or shower, steady stream of water, wash away as many pests as possible
  • Prune heavily infested areasclean scissors, and dispose of the cuttings immediately
  • Treat consistentlyinsecticide across the whole plant — stems and leaf undersides included — weekly for about 5 weeks to break the pest life cycle
  • Check weeklya quick look during your watering routine catches the next one early

Fertilizer

Check fifth

Fertilizer is rarely the solution to a plant problem — most issues are light, water, potting, pests or humidity, and need correcting first. It supports healthy plants; it doesn't fix struggling ones. In the UAE, the rule is once a month at half strength, October to May.

Signs it’s this

  • Two-tone discolouration — yellowing that turns brown at the tips
  • Brown, burnt leaf tips; yellowing lower leaves
  • White, crusty build-up on the soil surface
  • Leaf drop shortly after feeding
  • Dry or damaged roots out of the pot

Ask yourself

  • How often am I feeding — and at what strength?
  • Is the plant actually growing, or has growth stopped?
  • Is there a white crust on the soil surface?
  • Are the core factors — light, water, potting, pests — actually in order?

Common mistakes

  • Fertilising a struggling plantit worsens the issue instead of fixing it
  • Too much, too oftenhigh concentrations and frequent doses overwhelm the plant and build up salts in the soil
  • Feeding dry soilfertilizer on a bone-dry root ball burns the roots
  • Feeding through the summer slowdowna plant that isn't growing can't absorb it — the minerals just accumulate

The fix

  • Flush the soilsink or shower, run filtered water through for several minutes to wash out the built-up salts
  • Remove the crustscrape off the top centimetre of soil and replace it with fresh indoor mix
  • Pause feedingstop for 6–8 weeks, then resume at half strength on the October–May calendar
  • Repot if severefresh well-draining indoor mix, in a pot with drainage holes

Humidity

Check last

The goal is a balanced level of moisture in the air. Both low humidity and excess humidity — especially with poor airflow — stress the plant. With AC running, UAE rooms sit far drier than most tropical plants want.

Signs it’s this

  • Brown crispy tips despite good watering — too dry
  • Leaves curling inward; new leaves failing to open; bud drop — too dry
  • Mould on the soil, water blisters (oedema) under leaves — too damp, still air
  • Soil staying wet for long periods — too damp

Ask yourself

  • Is the plant sitting near an AC vent — or has the AC been off?
  • Does the air in the room feel very dry, or very humid?
  • Is this a humidity-loving species (calathea, fern, alocasia)?

Common mistakes

  • Misting the leavesthe boost lasts minutes, and water sitting on leaves can invite fungus
  • Parking plants under AC ventsdirect cold airflow dries the foliage out fast
  • Switching the AC off completelyhumidity spikes while the air goes still — ideal conditions for mould

The fix

  • Too dry: relocate and add moistureout of the vent path; run a humidifier nearby; group plants together
  • Too damp: get the air movingAC on fan mode or a fan; a dehumidifier if needed; don't crowd plants together
  • Remove mouldscrape off the mouldy top layer, replace with fresh dry mix, and move the plant somewhere brighter
  • Prune affected areasclean scissors, severely damaged leaves only
