How do semi-hydroponics work?

Semi-hydroponic plants are grown in non-soil substrate (such as LECA balls or pumic stone). Since there's no soil, you won't have to worry about any pests or pathogens that can appear in indoor plants (e.g. mould, fungi, gnats)

The bottom of the pot (where the non-soil substrate is) acts as a water reservoir, where the roots absorb water from. This is what makes caring for them so easy: a water meter tells you if the reservoir is empty. When it is, just water till the meter reads "max". Make sure to not go past the "max" mark to avoid overflowing the reservoir.

There is one thing to be aware of: when planted in soil, plants will obtain nutrients from the soil directly. In a semi-hydroponic system, there is no soil and the LECA/pumic stone do not hold any nutrients, so the plant will need to absorb nutrient that is diluted in the water.

As a result, it is necessary to regularly (1-2 times a month) provide your hydroponic plant with nutrients that have been diluted in the water.

We offer Beautanic Superfood. 120g will last about 6-8 months per plant. You can use any alternative, just make sure it's made for hydroponic/semi-hydroponic plants.

Caring For A Philodendron Red Leaf

Introducing our Philodendron Red Leaf – a beloved indoor plant known for its glossy heart-shaped leaves with striking red undersides. This eye-catching beauty effortlessly enhances any home or office space with its vibrant charm. What sets it apart? It's semi-hydroponic, which means hassle-free care without worrying about pests. Simply monitor the water meter, refill when empty, and watch it thrive. For optimal results, use Beautanic Superfood twice a month. Elevate your space with this low-maintenance yet stunning botanical addition.

Light: Bright indirect sunlight

As with most indoor plants, Philodendrons grow best in a space with lots of bright indirect light.

However, as with all plants, be careful with direct sunlight (especially near untinted windows), as too much will result in the plant to losing the colour in their leaves. Direct light also evaporates the water in the plant's leaves, causing its leaves to curl or burn. This risk of scorching is higher if your plant gets direct sunlight during the middle of the day, when the day is hottest. Either way, keep an eye open for brown scorch marks on your leaves and, if you spot any, move it a few feet further away from your window.

In general, try to avoid more than 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day. Especially during the middle of the day, when the sun is hottest.

Pro tip: Philodendron are highly tolerant to lower light levels (though they will grow more slowly and with less foliage the less light they get). To successfully acclimate your Philodendron in a low-light area, start by placing it by a window when you bring it to your home. Then, over the course of 4-5 weeks, as your plant acclimates to your space, you can slowly move it towards the spot with less light.

Water: Every 1 weeks

This Philodendron is completely soil free and works on semi-hydroponic system. All you have to do is check the water meter once a week. When it reads empty, simply top it up till it hits "max'.

For best results, use our Beautanic Superfood to provide your plant with sufficient plant nutrition: mix 1/2 a teaspoon per liter of water, once a month in the summer and twice a month in the winter.

Difficulty: Low maintenance

Philodendrons don't need much beyond adequate sunlight and the semi-hydroponic system makes watering simple.

Pets: Toxic to pets

Philodendrons are toxic to humans and animals.
