By day, the leaves lay flat to show off a unique set of red veins and dark green patches.
After sunset, the leaves of this indoor plant fold upward in a 'prayer-like' motion, earning it its unique nickname, the Prayer Plant.

Botanical name: Maranta Leuconeura

Prayer Plants grow best in spaces with bright indirect light, where the sun is soft or diffused. They can adapt to medium light, though be careful to not overwater it, as the soil will take longer to dry with lesser light. Avoid placing it under direct midday sunlight (especially during the summer), since that will cause your Prayer Plant to dry out and the leaf tips to brown. Never place it in a dark spot, since the soil will almost definitely take too long to dry out, which will cause your Prayer Plant's roots to rot (a death sentence).
Medium light diagram
Maintain moist soil

Every week, stick your finger 1 inch into the soil:

  • If you feel ANY moisture, at all, wait longer before watering.
  • If the soil feels COMPLETELY DRY, then it’s time to water.

Note: the more light it gets, the more often it'll need to be checked & watered

Discard excess water

When watering, fully water the entire soil mixture. Then, allow all the excess water to drain out the bottom of the pot’s drainage holes. Discard that water.

FAQ

Prayer Plants thrive in bright, indirect light and can tolerate medium to low light conditions. In their native tropical forests of Central and South America, they grow on forest floors, receiving sunlight filtered through leaves.

Best placement: Close to an east-facing window, or a few feet from a south or west-facing window with sheer curtains.

If the light is too low: Slows growth, causes leggy stems, and dulls the leaf colours.

If the light is too strong: Direct UAE sunlight can fade or bleach the leaf patterns.
Water every 1–2 weeks, keeping the soil consistently moist but never soggy.

How to check: Insert your finger 2–3 cm into the soil — if it feels dry at the top, water until it begins to drain from the bottom of the nursery pot.

Why this matters: Prayer Plants have fine, shallow roots adapted to evenly moist soil. Drying out too much can cause leaves to curl or develop brown edges. Overwatering, however, can lead to root rot.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.
Repot every 1–2 years or when roots start emerging from the drainage holes. Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like all plants, Prayer Plants need time to adapt to their new home after delivery. Repotting too soon can cause extra transplant stress.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.
Yes! Prayer Plants benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Prayer Plant is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.
We recommend avoiding direct use of UAE tap water. UAE tap water contains chloramine and high levels of dissolved minerals like calcium, which Prayer Plants are sensitive to. This can lead to scorched brown tips or a white crust forming on the soil surface.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.
Yes — they are fast growers that spread outwards with more leaves and stems, reaching around 30–40 cm in height. With the right care, they can become lush and full over a few years.
Yes — Prayer Plants are non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a great choice for pet-friendly homes.
Curling leaves: Often a sign of underwatering or low humidity (leaves curl to conserve moisture).
Brown edges: Can be caused by low humidity, excess fertilizer, or hard water.
Faded patterns: Usually due to insufficient light.

If you ever need some extra help caring for your Prayer Plant, feel free to send us a message on WhatsApp or book a plant care call with us.
Yes — Prayer Plants appreciate high humidity. They evolved in tropical forests where the air is constantly moist, and their thin leaves lose water quickly.

Tip: Mist the leaves once a day to boost humidity and wipe leaves regularly to remove dust, which can block light absorption.
Yes — as long as it’s kept away from cold air blowing directly onto it, which can cause leaf edges to brown.
